Halal cosmetics

Background information on Halal certification . As the Muslim population grows, so does the demand for Halal-certified cosmetics that take the Muslim faith into account.

What does Halal mean?

The word Halal is Arabic and means permitted or lawful. It refers to all things and actions that are permitted or permissible under Islamic law. This also includes Products that may be used according to Muslim belief. In Islam, animals are considered to be a special creation of Allah and therefore have a high status in this religion. This includes the right to animal husbandry that is appropriate to the species and based on the animals' natural living conditions. The use of animal ingredients in products is subject to strict regulations in order to be recognized as a Halal-certified product. In addition, Halal-certified cosmetics do not contain any chemical additives that are harmful to the environment and people. In addition, special hygienic and ethical manufacturing regulations must be observed to ensure the purity of the product.

What criteria must be met for certification?

With the Halal certificate The manufacturer assures the customer that the cosmetics have been manufactured according to Islamic religious production regulations and are therefore "halal". In relation to the production of cosmetics, this means that the raw materials, workplaces and employees must comply with strict hygiene guidelines. In addition, fair treatment of employees, the preservation of nature and the environment as well as sustainable development in the production process should be guaranteed. The products may only contain halal-compliant raw materials. Cosmetics often contain animal ingredients that are classified as problematic, such as collagen, gelatin and others. In addition, the products must be free of the following ingredients:

  • aliphatic alcohol
  • irradiated raw materials
  • Ingredients that could harm the end consumer.
What needs to be taken into account during production?

During the production process, the manufacturer must ensure that no cross-contamination occurs on the production equipment or in the raw material warehouse. If this leads to a connection with non-halal products, a thorough cleaning must be carried out before halal production starts. This applies to all machines, equipment, utensils, surfaces and clothing. The cleaning agents and other auxiliary materials must also not endanger the halal status. In addition, the products  be traceable. Two people are responsible for checking the manufacturing process: the Shariah auditor checks whether Islamic law is being observed, and the technical inspector checks the production facilities. First, the manufacturing process is documented from production to shipping. This includes checking whether hygiene regulations are being observed, whether the appropriate premises are being used, and which tools are being used. The packaging must also meet Halal requirements, which means that it must not contain any substances that are hazardous to health or any aliphatic alcohol. The certificate is signed by both examiners.
